Instead of natural foods, we have processed, chemicalized foods. Instead of nutrition and natural supplement research, we have only studies paid for by the drug companies. Purpose of Funding Research

To test the cardiovascular benefit of the nutrient
Coenzyme Q10 supplementation on elders.

Our preliminary research at WRF has found evidence for cardiovascular risk reduction in elders with Coenzyme Q10 supplementation. Extensive literature analysis reveals no previous studies answering this question.

The incidence of heart disease increases with age while the blood levels of Coenzyme Q10 decline with age. Absorption of the nutrient weakens in the aging gastro-intestinal tract, and food sources of Coenzyme Q10 are limited.

CoQ10 is highest in red meat and organ meat. We in the west have stopped eating the internal organs of animals, and domesticated livestock meat has much lower concentrations of Coenzyme Q10 than wild game meat does.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death and the number one cause of dependent disability. In Palm Beach County, we have access to a high population of elders for testing. Dr. Sears, the principal researcher, has a medical practice with over 1,000 elders. He also writes a monthly national newsletter subscribed to by more than 60,000 men, mostly elders.

A major concern among elders is their remaining quality of life. They commonly express concern over becoming a burden to loved ones in their final years. It is not easy to achieve healthy blood levels of Coenzyme Q10 without supplementation. Additionally, Co Q10 is one of the most expensive supplements for elders on a fixed budget. We need an answer to whether Coenzyme Q10 is an effective cardio therapeutic agent in the elderly.

The research needed is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, prospective study of the cardiovascular benefit of Coenzyme Q10 supplementation in elder men and women.

We will measure traditional cardiovascular risk assessments including: blood triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, cardiovascular risk ratio and stress testing for cardiovascular exercise tolerance. In addition, we will measure the less traditional indicators of C-reactive protein and homocysteine blood levels.

The study will last six months and involve 200 study participants.
